I was talking with my neighbor yesterday about her youngest child, who
is 6, has ADD & medicated (doesn’t surprise me, actually)
She was saying she put him in private school because he would get lost
in the public system (doesn’t surprise me either, actually. I would
too) Her oldest just got pulled out of Middle school because she was
failing & sends her to her Aunts for home schooling.
That brought up the subject of home schooling & I mentioned how we are
thinking of home schooling etc… and she brought up that kids in
private school come out "smarter" (I don’t think she was being rude
though) and went on to say how her son is learning sign language (okay,
good) and also now learning to count in foreign languages such as
Spanish and Swahili. Yes, you are reading me correctly, Swahili!
I exclaimed back to her in surprise "Swahili?!". She explained that the
teacher has them playing games that originate different countries and
that she wants them to learn the language so they can read the
instructions to learn the game (or something to that effect).
Does this sound a bit bizarre to anyone else? how is this going to make
the child smarter if the focus is not on learning standard schoolwork.
What do they do 1st grade, learn Vietnamese?
I dunno, is this a new learning technique?
