Pre-pregnancy planning, pregnancy, childbirth

OT choose me a career!

As I mentioned a while back DH has got a job in Seattle, so we’ll be moving
in the Autumn, this means that the way things are it will likely for me to
be difficult to work because I would need to get a visa in my own right, so
I’m wondering about at some point doing some studying, a student visa is
much easier to obtain than a H1b and the visa I will be on may allow me to
study anyway.

My background is Maths (degree level) and Computer Science (research and
teaching at degree level), but deep down I’ve always wanted to be in
healthcare, but I’ve never been sure exactly where because I don’t think I
want to be a doctor.

This year any plans I had have been thrown up in the air by the damage done
in late pregnancy and birth, I can’t guarantee I’m going to be well enough
physically for a long time do be a doula or midwife (both things I had
previously considered, I had hoped to start midwife training this
September).

I’m wondering about how I can move my skills in maths and computer science
over into the health care area, but I know not the first thing about how
things work in American universities, whether they would consider my
qualifications good or bad even. In England there is something called the
Open University where you can do bits and bobs towards a degree almost
entirely working from home. This winter I did a short course as an
experiment and it went very well, is there such an institution in the US,
such that I could start building some basic things that people would
recognise?

My other interest is pregnancy and breastfeeding in deprived communities, I
have no training and have not been able to get along side the women
officially, but I’ve been on the planning side this year. Is anyone aware of
local or national charities that do such things in the US? In the UK the
starting point would be SureStart which is national in deprived areas, but
then in each area there are local things too.

Basically I’m looking for any information that might help me get involved in
this kind of thing on a voluntary/student/permenant basis. Names of
charities would be helpful. Buzzwords about qualifications. Really,
anything, I just don’t know how to translate myself for a totally different
place. I don’t know if it’s relevant, but I’m a Christian (Baptist – dunno
if it is revelant) so any charities with that starting point are relevant,
though whilst I want to share my faith, I much more wanting to help, support
etc in just the same way that any other charity/organisation would, I just
included it for completeness as I know there are a few charities here where
there aim is the same but you have to be a christian to volunteer.

I think I’d definitely want to get some training as a breastfeeding helper,
so pointers to US organisations would be great, but I think this is
something I would wish to use in a wider context than as a primary role.

Thanks in advance for any ideas you can give me, I’m quite keen to make
contact with people ASAP either before or directly after the move as I don’t
want to get stuck in a rut, I want to be outwardly focussed from the start.

Cheers

Anne

Is it safe for me to use interior wall paint while pregnant?  If so,
are there any brands and/or ingredients I should look for?

Thanks,

Hospitalized and Bored!

Hi all…

My wife is 33 weeks pregnant and stuck in the hospital until our baby
is born!  She went in with a "Deep Vein Thrombosis" (read: nasty blood
clot) and did OK up until she started recovering.  The doctors still
want to keep her until full term since she can’t be on a
self-administered blood thinner and she’s started having contractions,
but she is able to walk around for a limited amount of time and her
nurses let her go from the Maternal Special Care Unit for about 2 hours
as long as she stays on hospital grounds.

The problem is that now that she’s feeling better and not on constant
pain medication, she’s going up the walls with having to stay!  She
knows she needs to for the baby, but is there any way that this
desperate husband can make her stay a little better?

Thanks!

-Andy

Very early labor/ bored bored bored VENT.

I’m due monday and have been having contractions now for about 24
hours, mild, every 10-15 minutes, but have stalled out several times
for a couple of hours each   And I am SO BORED!!!!   With DD this stage
only lasted about 12 hours.  DD is 23 months, and went to the
grandparents last night, and I sent DH back to work this AM since his
time off doesn’t start til next week and he needed to catch up on
things to be able to really take off.   Not that I really need anyone
here, I have friends and neighbors and everything (in-laws, hospital
etc) is within 5 minutes.  Plus, like I said, the contractions are very
mild so far.   I know I should relax and enjoy my last few hours of
peace and quite for a while but I am so restless.  The in-laws
understandably don’t want to relinquish DD since they have fun with
her, and it makes sense to just let her stay there since she is happy,
and we already said our big goodbye and had the big explanation and all
that.  I miss her, but I don’t want to confuse her by bringing her home
for just a few hours, then turning around and heading back.  I think
she kind of understands, she talks about "baby brother" and points out
his stuff, like "baby brother seat" "baby brother bed" "baby in tummy,"
etc…..

Sorry, this is kind of a pointless post.

looking for fertility advise

Looking for advise as i am a bit confused. I have been trying to
conceive for 4 months (plus two additional month of not being on the
pill but not timing anything). I tried using the urine tests to monitor
ovulation but they always came back positive. i then switched, the past
3 months, to the saliva test which *seems* to indicate ovulation around
the same time that my temperature does. so i wouldn’t worry except that
occasionally it also gives me the ‘ferning’ pattern right after i have
my period or the odd day that i should not be about to ovulate (super
early). my doctor seems hesitant to start testing until i have tried
for 6 months but this is worrying me. should it? i was pregnant 9 1/2
years ago when i was 30 …. my periods are super regular and my
temperature does rise and fall at the times i would expect it to.

FDA Seafood Warning!!!

Hey All, I came across this interesting website that offers a lot of
information on the negative affects of having mercury in the seafood
that we
eat, and how it affects our families.  All of the information is
supported
by the EPA and FDA, and as a woman it has really impacted the way my
family
and I eat seafood.  I thought that this might be important to ensure
our
personal health and that of our babies.  Hope its helpful!

 http://GotMercury.Org

You can use the website to calculate how much of any fish is safe for
you or
your children to eat in a week based on your weight and using the
government’s formula for exposure.

The government warns women and children not to eat swordfish, shark,
tilefish, and king mackerel.  Women and children should avoid tuna
whenever
possible.  In fact, Consumer Reports just warned pregnant women not to
eat
canned tuna at all.  We can all stand to avoid toxic mercury!
